The Columbia PTA conducts multiple programs throughout the school year.  Please check the calendar to see when the following programs are scheduled.

WATCH D.O.G.S.

WATCH D.O.G.S. ® is an innovative program being used by schools across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures in their student’s life.  Our goal is to have you spend at least one full day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and to provide an extra set of eyes and ears.  Please email Michael Conrad.  if interested in joining. Click here for the WatchDOGS Facebook page.  You can also view the WatchDOGS Twitter page here.

Leader of the Month
Students chosen for Leader of the Month are nominated by teachers & staff at any time (and can be nominated multiple times) throughout the month for displays of character and leadership.  We look for students who help others, strive to do their best, encourage others, and find ways to exemplify the Leader in Me habits.  Two students per grade per month are chosen and all Leaders of the Month are recognized at a special lunch with parents and family each month and presented with a certificate and yard sign.

Reflections

The Reflections program is a creative arts competition sponsored by national, state and local PTA organizations.  It provides an opportunity for children to express themselves artistically based on a common theme.  The six competition categories are:  literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography, and film/video production.

Multicultural Night
One night in February we will celebrate the seven continents and cultures of the countries.  Students get their "passports" stamped as they "travel" the continents to learn about different countries.  We encourage any parents that are willing to share the culture of another country to participate.

Teacher Appreciation Luncheons

Teacher Appreciation luncheons are a time to recognize and thank all of Columbia’s faculty and staff for their dedication to our students.  PTA volunteers are asked to provide teachers with a Duty Free Lunch during the luncheons.  In addition, volunteers from each grade level are asked to help sponsor one luncheon during the year.

Original Art Works
Original Art Works can take your student’s personal artwork and turn it into an array of items. During the art semester, your child will create a piece of art to be used for Original Artworks.  Parents will receive a packet with the art work, a brochure with examples of products and an order form.  These make wonderful keepsakes and gifts!

Bus Safety Week

Columbia students learn about bus safety:  loading, unloading, emergency exiting, safety inside and outside the bus as well as expected behavior during a bus ride.  Students also learn about walker safety: using crosswalks, listening to the crossing guard and watching for cars.

Fire Safety Week

During fire safety week, students learn what to do in case of a fire and how to help make their homes safe.  We have been fortunate to have Madison City Firefighters and the Fire House come to Columbia.  Students have the opportunity to tour the Fire House and practice escaping from a simulated home fire.

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is a nation-wide program that promotes drug awareness and sends a consistent “Anti-Drug” message to children.  All Madison city schools participate in activities recognizing Red Ribbon Week.

Space Week

Each spring, Columbia PTA hosts Space Week.  Students participate in various space-related activities such as a space parade, paper rocket crafting, virtual field trips and a visit from a traveling classroom.

K-5 Field Day Support

The month of May brings Field Day for our K-5th graders!  The PTA supports Columbia’s PE department as students cycle through a variety of activities such as tug-of-war, sack races and the water relay.

5th Grade Graduation

As our 5th grade students complete their education at Columbia Elementary and prepare to move on to middle school, the PTA supports the teachers in recognizing each student.
